This travel story is about my second visit to Macedonia.
Why I decided to go there? I wanted to make a surprise for my sister’s birthday. I have bought her so many birthday gifts in the past 10 years that I don’t even remember the last one. This time I wanted something different, something that we cоuld do together and something that would give us good energy and positive emotions. So I decided – let’s travel!
Initially I didn’t have a plan where to go but my budget was not that great and therefore I was searching for a cheap destination. Moreover, my sister didn’t have much experience in traveling and therefore the place should be somewhere near.
At that time I lived in Bulgaria and it was not that difficult and expensive to visit the neighbor countries for a few days (I had 5 directions to choose). I had already been to all of them but in my opinion one glimpse (spending a few days in a place) is not enough to see the entire beauty of the spot you visit and to feel the vibe of the everyday life.
So back to the idea of visiting Macedonia. The decision came suddenly while I was watching my favorite music channel on TV. First let me share with you what I like to do in my free time (apart from travelling). I enjoy watching popular music videos and guessing where the video is shot, in which country and city. Moreover, to find out if I have ever been to this place.
I saw a video on TV of a famous Macedonian singer. The video was shot in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. I had already been to Macedonia once but only to Ohrid – such a picturesque place (one of those that are included in my list “Will come back again one day!!!”).
And … the idea came to my mind – let’s make a trip to Skopje and Ohrid!
Of course I didn’t share anything with my sister as it was supposed to be a surprise. I only told her not to plan anything for the week No# as we were going somewhere abroad together! She was so happy and curious, asking so many questions. It is so nice to surprise someone, to see how his eyes are sparkling and a smile spreads across his face. I had about a week to prepare everything for the journey and the travel plan of course – which places to visit, how much it would cost (I am a budget traveler and I have studied accounting also, so I enjoy calculations), how to go there and etc.
During that time I was showing to my sister regularly the video of my new favorite song (that one shot in Skopje). She was curious where is this city, I told her that I didn’t have an idea and maybe it was somewhere in the Balkans ;).
A few days before the trip she began to insist on telling her where we were going. In the end I decided to share the secret.
I told her “Do you remember that Balkan song that I constantly listen to? We are going to this city from the video! To Skopje, the capital of Macedonia! And also you receive a bonus – a visit to Lake Ohrid!
